The King Is In the Field

What Would You Say To Your Beloved?

The Jewish month of Elul has a special spiritual energy for introspection
and repentance. There is a beautiful parable about Elul and the special relationship we have with G-d at this time.

Once there was a king who had a son whom he loved dearly.
The son wished to travel throughout the king’s many lands and
the king granted his son permission to travel. Months passed.
No word was heard from the prince. The king was worried.
One day, a ragged looking young man approached the gates
of the king’s palace. He walked toward the entrance but was
stopped by the guards.

“Don’t you recognize me?” the young man cried out.
“I am the prince. You must let me into the palace.”
The guards just laughed at him.
Could this common beggar possibly be their beloved prince?

The young man tried to reason with the guards.
He begged, demanded, pleaded that he be allowed to enter.
Out of total desperation, he cried out, “Father!”
From deep within the palace the king heard the crying.
Something sounded familiar. He listened until he was certain
that, indeed, it was the voice of his own son. The king himself
came running out to open the palace gates for his beloved son.

We are compared to the prince. Though we travel far,
we ultimately return to the palace of our Father, the King.
And when we return, the sound of the shofar
- a simple, wordless cry – brings the King to listen
and open the gates of the palace and let us in.
For this reason, it is the custom of the Jewish people
to hear the cry of the shofar every day during Elul.

Let us all cry out to the King, with the shofar
and with our own voices, that He let us into the palace.
We will then be happiest, and, so indeed will the King.

What is one thing you would like
to say to the King in the field?
Make a special time to say it to G-d today!

ELUL

From a class by Rabbi Shimon Raichik

Awaken and turn to your Beloved.
Why do we blow shofar during Elul?
If the shofar awakens us to fear, why do we blow shofar
when the King is smiling in the field?

Ahava, love is an awakening, a revelation from above,
an appreciation of all that the Abishter (G-d) gives us.

Y’era, fear is an awakening from below.
We accept the authority of the King over us and tremble at His might.
If we did not accept His authority, we would not feel the fear.
This is our work in Tishrei.

We work to arouse the level of awe in Tishrei,
to accept Hashem as our King.

In Elul, the King lowers Himself to our level.
We come close to Him in the field as one greets a Beloved Friend.

How Can You “Greet the King in the Field” in Elul?
What inner work can you do to prepare for Rosh Hoshanah?

Holy Sparks

The winds of Elul are blowing – can you feel them? The Jewish month of Elul has a very special spiritual energy for fixing past mistakes, clearing out the dust and stains of actions and behaviors that don’t reflect who we really want to be, and creating a new closeness with G-d.

The spiritual power of the month of Elul is explained by a beautiful parable given by Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, the first Rebbe of Chabad-Lubavitch:

“Once each year, a very mighty king leaves his palace, his guards, his finery, and goes out into the field to meet with his subjects. At that time, they can ask of him anything they wish. They do not need to wait in long lines, go through security checks, be announced ceremoniously. They can speak with him without hesitation. When the king returns to his palace, his subjects will once again have to go through all kinds of protocol to meet with him. So, of course, his subjects make the most of the opportunity.”

Imagine for a moment how difficult it would be for you to meet for an hour with the president of the United States. Not so easy. During the month of Elul, G-d is “in the field.” We don’t need to go through all kinds of red tape to reach the Master of the entire universe! We need only to come out to meet G-d, as it were, with a humble heart, and the King of all Kings will listen to us. G-d will accept our repentance and consider our requests most carefully.

The King will soon be in the field. Make sure not to miss this opportunity! To help you,
the Holy Sparks art of this month will focus on the four steps of teshuva (returning to the path of G-d).  With G-d’s help, I am preparing a new collection of Elul Art to help you make those changes you’ve been meaning to make.
