Joy Breaks Through All Boundaries!
During these special weeks we’ve been celebrating
the awesome holy days of the Jewish month of Tishrei:
Rosh Hoshana, Yom Kippur, and now Sukkos or Sukkot.
Perhaps you’ve noticed little booths with leafy roofs have
sprouted in Jewish neighborhoods everywhere, for the
weeklong harvest holiday, which crowns the festivals that
celebrate the crowning of the King of Creation,
and brings in joy for the whole year.
Pure, unconditional simchah (joy) — the joy that emerges
from deep within the soul — can move mountains.
Such is the joy we can experience in doing a mitzvah,
if we truly appreciate its significance. For the mitzvahs
are more than just the “good deeds” we do — they are
expressions of G-d’s joyful purpose in creating the world.
Throughout the cycle of Tishrei holidays, we have been
“climbing” to ever-higher levels of simchah (joy), and
Joy, our Sages tell us, breaks through all boundaries.
The transforming power of joy extends not just to the
individual, but to society at large. Pure simchah can change the
world. This, the happiest time of the Jewish year, is an
opportunity for us to vanquish all the negativity of the world
around us, by rejoicing together.
The pure joy we experience on Sukkot and Simchat Torah will
continue to inspire us to serve G-d with joy throughout the year.
May the cumulative effect of our mitzvahs and our simchah bring
about the ultimate transformation — when we rejoice together with
Moshiach, in the true and complete Redemption.
Last Tuesday Was the Scariest Day of My Life!
To prepare for the holiday I went shopping. Immersed in the holiday spirit, the last thing in the world I expected was to have to flee from a murderer – but that is exactly what I had to do last Tuesday and it was the scariest day of my life!
I had just come out of a store with my mother-in-law and we started walking toward home. Suddenly, a van pulled up about half a block away and two men jumped out and started chasing each other around the van. We thought they were playing a game until suddenly one man shot the other. We turned and ran for our lives!
We ran back into the store we had just left. A few minutes later we heard three more shots outside! What could we do? We were trapped in the store and the block was surrounded by police. After a while we peeked outside and saw two young men from our neighborhood. We quickly ran to them and asked if they had a car and if they could give us a ride home – and they did! We felt we had been miraculously rescued by the hand of G-d.
The Sukkah is the love of G-d, surrounding us. The Sukkah is like being in the room of G-d. It draws us close. When G-d sent those young men to take us home in the midst of this frightening situation, we felt the love of G-d surrounding us, drawing us close, and bringing us home – and that, my friend, is what it feels like to dwell in a sukkah with joy during Sukkot.
On Rosh Hoshanah and Yom Kippur, we are judged – our very lives hang in the balance! Then on Yom Kippur, we are given new life – and what do we do with this new life? We take the joy of this new life and give it back to G-d, and then dance and celebrate with the King of the world with joy that knows no bounds.
May you be blessed with unbounded joy
to break through all of your boundaries!
What boundaries would you like to break
through with joy?
Please share your comments with us
under the images to the left.
The Sukkah is like a little Bais Hamikdash,
a small house of G-d.
The Sukkah protects us from the prosecutor.
Sukkah is like being in the room of G-d.
It draws us close.
Sukkah is the love of G-d, surrounding us.
When we are in G-d’s own room,
how could we do anything wrong?
We would be too ashamed.
The test of Sukkah is humility.

The winds of Elul are blowing – can you feel them? The Jewish month of Elul has a very special spiritual energy for fixing past mistakes, clearing out the dust and stains of actions and behaviors that don’t reflect who we really want to be, and creating a new closeness with G-d.
The spiritual power of the month of Elul is explained by a beautiful parable given by Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, the first Rebbe of Chabad-Lubavitch:
“Once each year, a very mighty king leaves his palace, his guards, his finery, and goes out into the field to meet with his subjects. At that time, they can ask of him anything they wish. They do not need to wait in long lines, go through security checks, be announced ceremoniously. They can speak with him without hesitation. When the king returns to his palace, his subjects will once again have to go through all kinds of protocol to meet with him. So, of course, his subjects make the most of the opportunity.”
Imagine for a moment how difficult it would be for you to meet for an hour with the president of the United States. Not so easy. During the month of Elul, G-d is “in the field.” We don’t need to go through all kinds of red tape to reach the Master of the entire universe! We need only to come out to meet G-d, as it were, with a humble heart, and the King of all Kings will listen to us. G-d will accept our repentance and consider our requests most carefully.
The King will soon be in the field. Make sure not to miss this opportunity! To help you,
the Holy Sparks art of this month will focus on the four steps of teshuva (returning to the path of G-d). With G-d’s help, I am preparing a new collection of Elul Art to help you make those changes you’ve been meaning to make.
